How to Train Your Brain to Control Pain
Introduction by David Chester founder of Chester Law Group an Ohio Brain Injury Law Firm
Motorcycle accidents or in fact any type of serious auto accident can generate a number of injuries that include brain/spinal injuries, loss of mobility and chronic pain. Severe accidents can cause lifetime disabilities and possible death. Clinical and scientific studies are providing new information on how the nervous system works and offering alternative methods for pain relief. It is now possible to train your brain to control pain and is referred to as "neurofeedback". If you are into alternative medicine, neurofeedback programs are something you need to check on. These involve playing video games that alter brain function. If you've been in a motorcycle accident make sure you have a brain scan done immediately and continue to follow through with more scans as neurological damage tends to be progressive. Make sure to contact an Ohio motorcycle injury lawyer as soon as possible to see if you qualify for a personal injury settlement.

If you've been in a motorcycle accident, no doubt you are experiencing pain. There are many conventional therapies that you might have tried without great success to manage pain from nerve damage.
Before you consider surgery which is the last alternative, you need to consider how to train your brain to control pain. These programs are referred to as neurofeedback. One such program was developed by Clinician Kimberly Smith and is a completely noninvasive therapy that can deal with a number of debilitating symptoms.
Neurofeedback is a way of learning that allows you to alter your own brain waves. This involves a series of brain exercises that trains your brain in self-regulation that enhances over all central nervous system function and improves your mental performance, emotional control and balance in brain activity.
Neurofeedback brain exercises have been reported to treat migraines, premenstrual symptoms (PMS), chronic pain, memory loss, depression, autism, anxiety, sleep disorders, attention deficit, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to mention a few. These programs are not generally covered by insurance. Make sure to contact an Ohio motorcycle injury lawyer to find out what your rights are.
Exactly what is neurofeedback therapy?
Well, neurofeedback programs involve a series of 45 minute training sessions. These sessions involve sensors that are attached to your scalp with a gel that will sense brain waves that are recorded on the computer. No current is applied to you; just your brain waves are recorded so the procedure is completely noninvasive.
Based on positive wave trains your neurofeedback therapist will monitor your brain waves and shift you to more appropriate brain wave states. The process involves playing video games that respond to your brain waves. When your brain waves are meeting proper parameters the video game moves forward and allows you to continue. This corresponds to the reward or feedback.
This process is not a cure for some medical conditions but creates stability in the brain to improve brain function through self-regulation.
It is recommended that you have a minimum of 20 sessions depending on what you're trying to learn. Some individuals may require 40 or more sessions to make permanent changes in the brain. In general patients do 2 sessions per week but some prefer to have a session per day. A session per day will help to reach the results you desire faster. Each session runs 45 minutes. This includes a review of your symptoms, electrode (sensor) placement and then 30 minutes of brain training with the video games.
Training results tend to be permanent however if you suffer some traumatic event during or after the fact, you may require an extra session to put you back on course. Your initial evaluation takes about an hour and a half in which you will have an extensive interview of your symptoms and goals. You will also be provided with a trial session so that you can experience what you will be going through.
You may be given a continuous performance test (CPT) also known as a QIK test. These tests are psychological tests that measure an individual's attention and impulsivity. Video games that are currently used to train the brain include Dual Drive Extreme, Roller Ball, Inner Tube, Particle Editor, Hyper Pong and Toy Train Adventure which are produced by Somatic Vision.
These neurofeedback courses are usually not covered by insurance however you should still contact your insurance company to see if you can be reimbursed at least in part. Neurofeedback programs are often listed as biofeedback with insurance companies.
If you've been in a motorcycle accident and your brain/spinal injury was caused by the carelessness of another person, you may be entitled to financial compensation for pain and suffering, medical bills and lost wages.
