Akron crane accident demonstrates how quickly serious injury can occur

The crane of a truck crashed through the roof and second floor of a home in South Akron.

The Brubaker family hired Barberton Tree Service Inc. to remove a large tulip tree behind their Pershing Street home. The accident occurred on Tuesday, July 20 at about 12:30 p.m. The crane became unbalanced during the tree removal and fell onto the Brubaker’s home.

Investigators from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration were at the Akron home of Tracy Brubaker on Wednesday hoping to determine what caused the accident.

Investigators say it is possible that the tree was too heavy for the crane. When the crane started attempted to lift it, the computer may have sensed the load was too heavy for the machine and automatically shut it down to prevent the operator from lifting the tree.

A larger crane was on its way to the home the crane toppled over and went through the Brubaker's roof.

Damages to the building are estimated at $70,000, with another $15,000 for the value of contents. Fortunately, no injuries were reported after the crane crash.

This accident is an example of how quickly tragic accidents can happen. Serious injuries caused by negligence change the lives of Ohio residents every day. It is because of untrained operators like this who are making it nearly impossible for companies in this field to be able to get or afford insurance. There should be more stringent policing of the "operators" who are out there right now. I am a crane operator and have pulled out many trees, if you have any doubt about the crane being able to do the job, then break it down into more than one pick, not trying to "cowboy" it out with one pick. This could have been easily prevented.
