A new study shows that adults may be just as likely, or even more likely, as teens to text while behind the wheel.
 
The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project released a report last week titled Adults and Cell Phone Distractions. The researchers found that 47 percent of adult texters and 27 percent of all adults have sent text messages while driving. Thirty-four percent of teens who text admit to texting while driving.
 
Adults between the ages of 18 and 34 are most likely to engage in texting while at the wheel. Fifty-nine percent of texters in this age group have written or read text messages while driving. In comparison, 50% of texters between the ages of 34 to 35 and 29 percent of texters between the ages of 46 and 64 have texted while driving.
 
The study also found that adults are far more likely than teens to talk on the cell phone while behind the wheel.   Almost 75% of adults who own a cell-phone have used it while driving compared to fifty-two percent of cell phone-owning teens.
 
In 2008, approximately 6,000 American drivers were killed in car accidents that were caused by distracted drivers.
