According the Ohio State Patrol, two people suffered serious injuries following a Batavia Township Ohio car accident August 26. An 18-year-old male hit another vehicle head on after traveling into oncoming traffic. Troopers stated that the young male went off the right side of the road and over-corrected, causing him to travel into the opposite lane. The two passengers in the other car, a 21-year-old male from Batavia and another male from Flint, MI, experienced life-threatening injuries. The two men were airlifted to University Hospital.

Head-on impacts, such as the one described above are especially serious, given the high combined speed of the two vehicles traveling in opposite directions. As you might remember from high school physics, force of impact equals mass times acceleration, and cars traveling toward each other create a lot of force at impact.

On a related note not directly tied to this story, in my years of experience, head-on collisions tend to result in serious injuries and even fatalities. This is why I tell my family, friends and clients to always wear their seatbelts. Seatbelts reduce the chances of serious injury in a car accident tremendously. Without seatbelts, you are thrown around the vehicle like a rag doll. Many times brain injuries, such as MTBI (Mild Traumatic Brain Injury) result from the head striking the inside of the vehicle. Also, if you do not wear your seatbelt, defense counsel will try to argue that you are partly to blame for your injuries because if you had been wearing your seatbelt, you would not have been so seriously injured.  It is called contributory or comparative negligence. 

In 2008, the Township of Batavia (population 17,503) had a total of 487 reported auto accidents. Only one of these accidents were fatal. Out of 158 injury crashes, 263 people were injured. Clermont County, Ohio (population 177,977) had a total of 5,382 reported auto accidents. 23 of these accidents were reported fatal, with a total of 27 fatalities. Out of the 1,425 injury crashes in Clermont County, 2,123 people were injured.
