Cleveland heat wave may cause life-threatening child injury

High Cleveland temperatures over the next few days may lead to dangerous heat exhaustion and even heat stroke, particularly for the very young and the very old. If your child is in sports camp or an outdoor day camp, they may be especially at risk of heat injury. While exercise and outdoor activity are great for kids, it is important to avoid overheating. Heat injuries are the leading cause of sports related deaths.

Signs of heat exhaustion

Body temperature over 101 degrees
Headache
Nausea
Dizziness
Fainting

In heat stroke, the body temperature rises over 104 degrees and the victim may show signs of altered mental status. The victim may be sweating profusely or the skin may be hot and dry. More than 50 percent of those with heat stroke die, so if you suspect heat injury seek immediate medical attention.

Your child’s camp or summer program should be actively working to prevent heat injury. There should be plenty of water and electrolytic drinks (such as Gatorade) available so children can stay adequately hydrated. Counselors should recognize the signs of heat injury and be able to call for medical help if needed.

If your child is injured because his Ohio summer camp did not take adequate steps to prevent heat injury or did not provide adequate emergency care, you may have an Ohio serious injury case. Call the Cleveland personal injury and wrongful death attorneys at Chester Law Group to learn more.
