A 31-year-old East Palestine man was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident October 17 in Unity Township. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the man went off of the road, struck a tree and eventually overturned. He was traveling west on Hadley Road. No other details were available.

One-car accidents make up a surprising portion of fatalities on Ohio roads each year. Striking objects such as trees increases the likelihood of serious injury and death because the tree does not "give" in that the forces are not absorbed, as they would be by the crumple zones on another car. Much of the force of impact is transferred directly into the passenger compartment of the colliding vehicle, and into the bodies of the occupants. The human body simply was not meant to absorb the impact from even a minor speed collision with a tree. Over my years of practice as a personal injury lawyer here in Ohio, some of the worst injuries I have seen have come from impacts with trees.
