9-year-old Olivia Thompson, of  Salem,  Ohio, lost her life in an accident that occurred on State Route 14 at East State Street in  Salem,  Columbiana,  Ohio. Police reported on November 9, 2012 at approximately  9:20  pm, a 1998 Chevy S10 pickup was being driven by a 27-year-old man of Washingtonville, Ohio, west on State Route 14, east of Lundy. A pedestrian, the 9-year-old girl, allegedly ran from north to south into the street, near 530 East State Streetand into the path of the pickup. The front of the pickup struck the child, then the driver allegedly fled the scene. The girl was thrown and rested beneath a parked vehicle along the south side of State Route 14. KLG ambulance transported the girl’s body to Salem Hospital. Two occupants of the pickup, 14 year old Dairian Robinson and 35-year-old Melanie K. Sturgell, both of Salem,Ohio, were not injured. The man was later found and had charges lain against him. Sinsley towed the vehicle.

The injury crashes which occurred in 2011 and involved pedestrians amounted to 750 which resulted in fatalities.  Salem,  Columbiana,  Ohio, had a population of 5,703 in 2011; there were 0 fatal crashes of a total of 130. Pickup vehicles that were involved in accidents in 2011 were 14518, which caused injuries.  Accidents, which involved a parked vehicle in  Ohio in 2011, amounted to 10 of 16,393, which caused fatalities. Those accidents, which involved improper crossing, were 29, which caused fatalities. 108 non-motorists were involved in fatal accidents last year and 2 involved traffic flashers.
