According to authorities, a man went off the side of the road and struck a telephone pole, sending him to the hospital. The man was traveling on Clifton Boulevard around 1:30 am when he hit the pole, causing it to break in half, and flipping his car onto it's top. The car then hit a nearby tree. The man was sent to the hospital injured, yet responsive.
 
The forces generated by a moving object hitting a stationary object, such as a telephone pole, are massive. The force of the impact can cause catastrophic injuries. Very little of the force of impact is absorbed by the inflexible telephone pole, and as a result most of the force of impact is transferred through the vehicle to the passenger compartment and into the bodies of the occupants. Add to this a roll over, and the likelihood of serious neck, back and brain injuries and even death rise. This is because there is very little metal on the top of a car designed to absorb impact forces. Also, a person is more likely to get twisted in their seat and end up with forces at odd angles being applied to the neck and back. In my experience, these shearing forces lead to many serious neck and back injuries.  However, a seatbelt, in my opinion, helps lessen the risk of injury in most accidents. Without another vehicle or flexible material to absorb the forces and lessen the impact, serious injuries can occur often.
