According to the Ohio Highway Patrol a 61-year-old man died at the Tittle Road crossing of CSX tracks when an oncoming train struck his truck when he failed to stop at the crossing. The man’s truck was heavily damaged and troopers say he was not wearing his seat belt. The two train operators were thankfully unharmed according to Ohio State Troopers.
 
Train accidents are often times deadly because of the forces involved in a collision. As you know may remember from physics class, the force of an object equals its mass times its accelleration. With the massive weight of the train, it does not take much accelleration (change in speed) to exert a deadly amount of force on the relatively small motor vehicles that get caught on the train tracks and its occupants.  Not wearing a seatbelt can also cause catastrophic injuries in any type of motor vehicle accident, not just train accidents. Without a seatbelt, I have seen the results of people being thrown around like rag dolls inside the vehicle and ejected through the glass. The impact on the glass and then the ground usually ends in catastrophic head and neck injuries.  Train accidents in Ohio are a very rare occurrence, with only 79 crashes during the whole year in 2008, according to the ODPS. Of those crashes only eight were fatal and 26 caused injuries.
 
In general, men over the age of 61, however, have been the driver of over 35,000 accidents in 2008, which represents 53.7% of all accidents.
 
Defiance County, with a population of 39,500, had a total of 1,515 accidents in 2008 according to the Ohio Department of Public Safety. That is approximately one accident for every 26 people. They had only three fatalities and 341 injuries that year. Delaware Township contributed nothing to the fatality number and 22 injuries.
