Erie County Ohio Truck Accident Attorney | Two teens seriously injured in Vermillion Township truck collision

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, two male teens, both age 19, were seriously injured in a Vermillion Township, Ohio accident October 4. The teens were driving along US Route 30 when a tanker truck, driven by a 59-year old Canfield man, struck their pickup truck. Reports state that the pickup went off the road and ejecting both teens. The teens ended up at MetroHealth Medical Center. At the time of this post, the driver was in critical condition and the passenger was in stable condition. The truck driver did not suffer any injuries.  Our prayers go out to every one involved.
 
Large trucks pose a special risk on Ohio roads. They can weight over 80,000 pounds and the forces generated by their enormous mass can cause serious injuries. Ejection injuries are very dangerous in that the occupant usually suffers impacts from the windshield and again when striking the ground. The forces generated at impact with the ground can cause catastrophic injuries to the relatively fragile human body. In my Ohio personal injury practice, some of my most seriously injured clients come from ejection type injuries.

While I do not know if everyone was wearing a seat belt or not in the above case, this accident reminds me of the importance of making sure everyone always wears their seat belts while driving on Ohio roads. Also, from a legal point of view, ff you do not wear your seat belt and someone else causes an accident and hurts you, defense counsel may argue you are negligent for not wearing a seat belt and therefore they do not want to pay for some or your entire injury claim.  Seat belts save lives. Period. Buckle up.

Erie County, Ohio (population 79,551) had a total of 2,596 reported accidents in 2008. 11 of these accidents were fatal and 540 were injury crashes (824 total injuries). Vermillion Township, Ohio (population 9,575) had a total of 115 reported accidents in 2008. There were zero fatalities and 25 injury crashes (39 total injuries).
