Type: Fatal Truck Accident
 
A pickup truck collided with a semi-truck September 23, causing the semi-truck to explode and killing the pickup driver. The driver of the pickup truck ran off of the road and stuck the semi, which was waiting to pull out of a parking lot. The semi’s driver was able to escape before the explosion. Unfortunately, the pickup’s driver was not. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

The cause of the explosion is not known at this time.  However, in general, these secondary explosions are a not often talked about. Everyone knows that trucks are dangerous because their mass creates a lot of force in impacts, they are slow to stop or maneuver, and more.  But most people do not fully realize that the cargo carried by some trucks itself can be hazardous and pose a much greater risk to the other driver and the surrounding area than the actual collision.  Hazardous chemicals, explosive chemicals, flammable objects, etc, are all transported on Ohio roads each day. You may not know what is inside the truck at first glance, like you might with a gas truck with a gas company logo on the side of the tanker truck. It is just another reason to treat trucks with the respect they deserve as the true kings of the road.

Franklin County, Ohio (population 1,068,978) had a total of 33,794 reported accidents in 2008. 85 of these were fatal, with a total of 94 fatalities. 8,581 of the crashes were injury crashes (12,451 total injuries). Columbus, Ohio (population 711,470) had a total of 24,054 reported accidents in 2008.
