According to the Ohio State Patrol, a 19-year-old Brook Park man’s motorcycle struck an 86-year-old Grafton man’s pickup truck September 5. Witnesses stated that the young man on the bike failed to yield at an intersection, struck the truck, and was ejected from the motorcycle. He was taken to EMH Regional Medical Center, where he was then airlifted to MetroHealth Medical Center. The man driving the pickup truck was not injured.

Accidents such as the one above illustrate the dangers of driving a motorcycle on Ohio roads. Whether the motorcycle driver is at fault or not in any particular motorcycle to car accident, the results are almost always the same. The car or truck driver is hurt much less relative to the motorcycle driver or passenger. The reason for this is obvious. The motorcycle has no ability to absorb the forces of impact and protect its riders like a car does with its crumble zones and air bags.   Also, many times the riders are ejected from the motorcycle and suffer a second round of injuries when they impact with the ground. Neck and back and brain injuries are common when a relatively frail human body collides with the ground. 



Force of impact equals mass times acceleration. With a small mass, the force on the car from the bike is usually easily absorbed. Not true for the bike riders.  The large forces on the human body during a motorcycle ejection situation can be deadly.  Even with a helmet, the rest of the human body can suffer catastrophic injuries. This is why I always tell clients who do not want to wear helmets that they may be a great rider, but the slightest negligence on the part of a careless car or truck driver may dent their car but kill you and your passenger. You have to have your head "on a swivel" looking out for and trying to anticipate the negligence of any car or truck driver in the vicinity. What would normally be a fender bender if two cars were involved often becomes a tragedy when a motorcycle is involved.
 
Lorain County, Ohio (population 284,664) had a total of 7,141 reported accidents in 2008, with 29 of those being fatal (30 total fatalities). 1,710 of the total reported accidents were injury crashes, with a total of 2,604 injuries. In 2008, Grafton Township, Ohio (population 2,722) had a total of 96 reported accidents, with 31 of those accidents being injury crashes.
