A 23-year-old woman was seriously injured and is in critical condition following a collision with a grain truck October 17. The truck, driven by a 51-year-old Wellington man, struck the passenger side of her vehicle at the intersection of Whitehead Road and Route 303. Both vehicles were forced off of the road due to the impact. The woman was airlifted to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

In my experience, head on collisions with cars and trucks often result in serious injuries to the occupants of the car, but side impact injuries can even  be worse. Cars are simply not able to absorb the same amount of force from the side as they do from the front, in my opinion. The huge mass of the truck creates a level of force that the human body simply cannot withstand. While side curtain airbags may help, the relative lack of crumple zone metal on the sides of cars compared to the front make survival less likely. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and those involved in this collision.

Lorain County, Ohio (population 284,664) had a total of 7,141 reported accidents in 2008. 29 of these were fatal and 1,710 were injury crashes (30 total fatalities, 2,604 total injuries).
