In related news, a 70-year-old Marion man was struck by a train on January 24, 2011 at the Kenton Avenue crossing. The man was walking on the railroad tracks. According to reports, the crew allegedly saw the man and blew the horn. Police say that the crossing gates were functioning properly. The man was pronounced dead at Marion General Hospital. Police are further investigating the accident. The mans body was sent to Franklin County Coroner’s office for an autopsy.

In 2009, there were 2,681 pedestrian-related accidents. The number of total accidents involving trains in 2009 were 45 and three of those were fatal. In Marion Township, there were 359 total accidents. Property damage resulted in 269 of the total accidents. 86 had accident-related injuries, and two resulted in fatalities.
