Morrow County Ohio Auto Accident Attorney | Cardington woman injured in collision with combine

City: Cardington, Ohio

County: Morrow County, Ohio

Date: October 11, 2010

Type: Combine / Car Accident

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a 62-year-old Cardington woman was injured following an accident October 11. A 52-year-old Cardington man driving a combine failed to yield the right of way at a stop sign when the woman struck his vehicle. She was airlifted to a Columbus-area hospital after rescuers had to free her from the wreckage. She is listed in fair condition. The combine driver was cited.

The tremendous damage to the car is expected in this type of collision. The combine's greater mass generates more force at impact, which is transferred into the car's structure. Luckily modern cars are designed to crumple around the occupants and absorb the force of the blow from the impact. What looks horrible from the outside of the car is often the very thing that saves the occupant's life. If the car did not absorb the force of impact and crumple, all that force would be transferred into the body of the occupant. This is why people with older cars with thick metal cause serious injuries with no apparent outside damage to the car. The force of impact is almost completely transferred through the car into the occupants' bodies, much like one billiard ball striking another ball. This transference of energy is what causes severe neck and back injuries. Think about what would happen if you put an egg in a small metal box and shook the box. The box would not be damaged but the egg would break. The egg in this example is the occupant of a car, and the metal box is the car. This is why eggs are stored in cardboard that crumples to absorb the shock of impact and protect the eggs. This analogy helps juries to understand why you can have serious injuries will little or no car damage.

Morrow County, Ohio (population 31,628) had a total of 1,083 reported accidents in 2008. Five of these accidents were fatal and 282 were injury crashes (6 total fatalities, 414 total injuries). Cardington, Ohio (population 1,849) had a total of 27 reported accidents in 2008.
