Type: Car / Bus Accident

According to the Ohio State Patrol, a car collided with a Tri-Valley Local Schools' bus around 7:15 a.m. September 20. The bus was transporting nine students to the Excel Academy in Newark. No word on how the accident happened, but the driver of the car was airlifted to a Columbus hospital. The bus driver and students did not suffer any injuries. The same district experienced a fatal bus crash in June of 2010.

This accident is common on Ohio roads in that the driver of the smaller car is seriously injured. This is because the mass of the bus is so much greater than that of the car, and so the force created by the bus is much larger. Many times it is the driver of the car who is hurt and the occupants of the bus who are hurt, especially if there are no seat belts on the bus.   If the bus driver was at fault, then qualified immunity would apply, and the city or state would pay what is not covered by automobile Medpay, collision coverage, or health insurance.

Muskingum County, Ohio (population 84,585) had a total of 3,194 reported accidents in 2008. 10 of the total accidents were fatal, with a 11 total fatalities. As for injury crashes, 664 of the total accidents reported were injury crashes (985 total injuries).
