Muskingum County Ohio Car Accident Lawyer | Nashport School Bus Crash: Could Seat Belts on Ohio Busses Save Lives?


A school bus carrying seven young children went off the road last week, hitting a utility pole and perhaps rolled several times before flipping on to its roof. All the occupants were injured and one kindergarten student was killed. Now, Ohio lawmakers wonder if school belt seatbelts could prevent serious injuries and save lives.
 
The crash occurred at about 8am on Wednesday, June 2 near Dresden in Muskingum County. The wreck left the 47-year-old bus driver seriously injured. Six of the student passengers had minor injuries and one student, six-year-old Kasey King of Frazeyburg, Ohio, was killed.
 
The school bus was on its way to Nashport Elementary School which is located about 45 miles east of Columbus.  
Officials are not sure what caused the school bus crash, and the incident remains under investigation.
 
Hours after the accident, the Ohio House of Representatives gave unanimous approval to a bill that would require seat belts on all new and refurbished school busses starting in 2014. 

Approximately 20 children a year are killed in school bus accidents; an additional 500 are injured. Children are most often hurt as a result of being ejected from the bus or being tossed around the bus. Seat belts can prevent child injury and death in both these scenarios.
