A young girl from Logan County was tragically killed Wednesday afternoon when the car she was in was driving south on Rt 23, making a left hand turn, near Circleville.   The car that the young girl was a passenger in was struck by a northbound tractor-trailer that was traveling straight.  The tractor trailer was driven by a Newark man.
 
This tragic collision that claimed the life of a lovely young girl is all to common on Ohio roads.  In 2008, there were 10,113 incapacitating injuries on Ohio roads, according to the Ohio Department of Public safety.  There were 180,921 passengers in crashes.  With three fatal crashes killing 3.3 people each day in 2008, that means that a person was killed on Ohio roads every 7.4 hours. These sobering statistics are made even worse when you realize that motor vehicle crahses killed 48 children and injured 9,025 children through the age of 14.

Left turn accidents are especially dangerous because the car turning left exposes the passenger side of the car to a direct impact with the oncoming traffic.  There is little metal between the fast moving multi ton vehicle and the body of the occupant of the vehicle.  When you ad a truck to the mix, which can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds, you can see how serious injuries are very likely.
 
Also, in my years of experience, seatbelts do not help as much with direct side impacts as they might with a direct impact. Seatbelts cannot absorb the force of a two ton car traveling at 35 miles an hour directly into the side of the vehicle.
 
Looking at crash statistics, Circleview Township had no fatal car crashes in 2008, but had 45 injury crashes that hurt 52 people.  Pickaway County had 14 fatal crashes killing 16 people in 2008, and 302 injury crashes that hurt 437 people.
