Recalled Drug Tainted With Glass Shards; Are You At Risk?

Amgen incorporated, the maker of  the anemia treatment drugs Epogen and Procrit, has issued a recall because the injected drugs may contain glass flakes that may cause blood clots, swelling of veins, immune system reactions and other problems. Epogen is used to treat anemia in patients with chronic renal failure who are on dialysis. Procrit treats anemia in cancer patients on chemotherapy and patients with HIV infections.
 
The glass flakes are the result of the chemical interaction of the drug with glass vials over the product's shelf life. The California-based company claims that the flakes are barely visible and that they have received no complaints or reports about problems associated with the contamination.
