A 71-year-old Mansfield man’s Honda Civic went slightly left of center and hit a dump truck, causing him to spinout August 31. The accident occurred on OH-13 in Richland County. A 66-year-old male was behind the wheel of the dump truck when it rolled into a roadside ditch, causing it to flip onto it’s roof. The driver of the Honda Civic was flown to Columbus’ Grant Medical Center and listed in fair condition. The driver of the dump truck was taken to Knox Community Hospital and has been released. The accident occurred right on the county line of Richland County, Ohio and Knox County, Ohio.  

Head on impacts can be some of the worst impacts on Ohio roads. The two vehicles traveling in opposite directions create large forces when they hit each other. If both cars are traveling at 40 MPH for example, the impact would be equal to one car hitting something stationary at 80 MPH. These head on collisions can cause devastating injuries to the relatively soft human body and skeletal structure. Add to this the larger forces created by the heavier dump truck, and it is no wonder that the occupant of the smaller car was hurt. The dump truck has more metal to absorb the smaller forces created by the smaller car.
