According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety in 2009 there were 34,939 accidents while it was raining that resulted in 80 fatalities and 13,190 injuries. This is slightly down from the 35,703 accidents in 2008. Wet road conditions also played a huge role in accidents in 2009 causing 163 fatalities and 23,312 injuries. 6,267 passengers had to be extricated from accidents in 2009, of those 5,829 were not fatal.

Rain was the cause of a two car accident in Massillon on July 21 according to local police. A broken down vehicle was pushed approximately 130 feet when a van was unable to stop and hydroplaned into the Honda. Both Massillon and Jackson firefighters were on the scene to extricate the passengers from the vehicles. Both Ohio 21 and Lake Avenue were closed briefly after the accident. Both drivers were taken to area hospitals complaining of minor injuries.

The large city of Massillon with a population of 31,325 had only 745 accidents in 2009 according to the ODPS that is approximately one in every 42 people being involved in an accident. These accidents caused only two fatalities and 283 injuries in 2009. Stark County had 10,064 accidents which is about one in every 37 people. These accidents resulted in 25 fatalities and 3,743 injuries.

Rain on Ohio roads adds a very real danger not present in dry weather conditions. When the roads are wet, stopping distance is larger, and handling of vehicles decreases. This means it is harder to stop or get out of the way of an impending accident.  Wet weather conditions are specially dangerous to new drivers, and they do not have the experience to know how hard to press on the brake to stop appropriately. Even with today's advanced anti-lock breaks, rain and snow contribute to many serious accidents and deaths each year on Ohio roads. Be sure to talk to any new driver's in your family about driving slower or more careful in rain or snow conditions. Add to these dangers  the possibility of invisible "black ice" in the winter and there is a lot to talk to your teenage drivers about. Better to talk to them now than later. Your child's life could depend upon it.
