A 43-year-old Maple Heights man and a 22-year-old Brooklyn woman were seriously injured following a motorcycle accident September 2. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office stated that the accident occurred on the I-271 N entrance ramp, right off of Route 8. The bike hit a concrete barrier, rode it for 900+ feet, eventually catching fire. The passengers were still on the motorcycle when it went up in flames. The two were thrown approx. 500 feet when the bike hit a guardrail. The two passengers both suffered serious injuries and burns, and were transported to Akron City Hospital.
 
In my experience as an Ohio personal injury lawyer, motorcycle accidents rank very high in creating serious injuries. Motorcycles lack the impact resistance of the metal cocoon of a car or truck, and the occupants usually are ejected from the motorcycle upon impact. This secondary impact with the ground can cause catastrophic injuries or even death, especially when the bike is traveling at high speeds.
 
In 2008, Summit County, Ohio (population 542,899) had a total of 15,654 reported accidents, with 31 of those being fatal. 3,312 of the total accidents were injury crashes, with 4,896 people injured. The Village of Northfield, Ohio (population 3,827) had a total of 38 reported accidents in 2008, with zero of those being fatal. Summit County saw a decrease in total reported accidents in 2009 (14,292).
