Type: Fatal Motorcycle Accident



Ohio Highway Patrol has reported that a 62-year-old Berlin Center man was killed in a motorcycle accident October 9. His bike collided with a Chevy Silverado, driven by a 65-year-old Kinsman man. The SUV was turning a corner when the collision occurred. The crash remains under investigation.

Motorcycle accidents make up a significant portion of deaths on Ohio roads each year. The reasons for this are obvious.  The motorcycle has no protection such as air bags and crumple zones, like cars do. Also, after the motorcycle impact, the rider is often ejected from the vehicle at high speeds. The resulting forces generated by the impact with the ground usually cause catastrophic neck and back injuries, even if a helmet is worn, in my experience.

In general, in Ohio, a rider of a motorcycle must not just watch for his own possible negligent driving, but watch for the potential negligent driving of all other drivers around him or her. What would be a minor fender bender if two cars collided often ends up a tragedy when a motorcycle is involved. The risks of being seriously injured riding a motorcycle on Ohio roads is much higher than riding in a car, in my opinion. Our condolences go out to the family of the victim in the above accident.

Trumbull County, Ohio (population 225,116) had a total of 5,327 reported accidents in 2008. 30 of these were fatal and 1,452 were injury crashes. Mecca Township, Ohio (population 2,829) had a total of 63 reported accidents in 2008.
