Trumbull County Truck Accident Lawyer | Series of Fatal Truck Accidents Illustrate the Dangers of Trucks on Ohio Roads

On March 31, three US Marine recruits were killed when a car carrying five recruits was involved in a multi-vehicle accident involving a semi.  The fatal collision occurred on state Route 82 in Warren Township.

A second triple fatality collision occurred this week when according to police and witnesses, a vehicle caught between two trucks on Interstate 80 killed a Warren driver and her two out of town passengers.  It appears the accident occurred when a tractor-trailer did not stop in time, striking the SUV and pushing it into a FedEx truck.  The driver of the semi that caused the accident suffered only minor injuries. The crash is still under investigation and charges are pending, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

These tragic collisions illustrate the point that trucks pose a serious threat to the lives of all Ohio drivers. Some of these dangers are unavoidable by the car drivers. There is little anyone can do when they are being struck by a truck that failed to leave an assured clear distance.

However, drivers should always be aware in other contexts that trucks weigh 80,000 pounds or more and take a lot longer to maneuver and stop than cars do.  Truck drivers may drive long hours to get their loads delivered on time, which may reduce their reaction time to potential threats.  It is important to give trucks the respect they deserve as “kings of the road” and not put yourself in a dangerous situation by failing to realize the physical limitations of trucks.  When ice and snow fall on Ohio roads, the dangers posed by trucks and semi trailers increases, and so should the caution of both every truck driver and car driver.

I make it a point not to drive in front of or beside a semi truck whenever possible. You never know what can happen on the roads, and I prefer to not have a semi truck nearby if something does happen.  The fact that semis weigh at least twenty times more than the car I am driving fills me with concern, as I know that even low speed accidents can result in catastrophic injuries to the occupants of cars involved in truck accidents.
