According to the Ohio State Patrol, a 21-year-old female was killed in a two-vehicle accident September 2. She was driving on Route 163 when the car crossed into oncoming traffic. The car hit a 32-year-old male’s SUV head-on. He was taken to Mercy St. Charles Hospital (Oregon) and has been listed in fair condition. The female was pronounced dead at the scene.

Our sincere best wishes go out the family at this time. Unfortunately, this tragedy is played out all too often on Ohio roads each year. As I have stated many times in my blogs, the dangers of heavier vehicles, like SUV's, and the forces created when they are involved in a collision can be devastating. 
 
In 2008, Wood County, Ohio (population 121,065) had a total of 3,772 reported accidents, with 14 of those being fatal (16 total fatalities). Lake Township, Ohio (population 10,350) had a total of 285 reported accidents, with one of those being fatal. In 2009, Wood County saw a decrease in reported accident (3,415 total accidents).
 
Once again, our condolences go out to the families. I always remind my family that we don't really realize the forces involved in collisions between cars and trucks until we see one on tv or are involved in one either ourselves or through a loved one. Speed is deceptive. What seems like a slow speed in a comfortable, temperature controlled, sound insulated vehicle, can be deadly when seen from outside the vehicle. I remind myself every time I get in my car or truck that this vehicle has the potential to be accidentally used to injure or kill me or someone else. Fatalities occur every day on Ohio roads, as I see them in my practice on a regular basis.
