How and where do I get my car fixed?

A:

The party at fault or their insurance company is required to either repair your vehicle or pay you for the value of the vehicle if it is beyond repair.  Usually the auto insurance company has the option to repair your car or "total it out" and pay you for it.  If they pay you for it then the give you what's called the fair market value of the vehicle.  The fair market value does not necessarily mean the Kelly blue book value, but it means they are required to pay you the value for a comparable vehicle in your area.

In Ohio, the general rule is that you can take your vehicle anywhere you want to be fixed if the person at fault's insurance company is paying for repairs.  However, if you are using your own auto insurance to fix your car, make sure to check your policy to make sure you are not limited in where you can get it fixed.  For the most part, you can pick any reputable body shop you want.
