Mild TBI May Go Undiagnosed; Learn the Signs And Symptoms

Did you know that it’s not always possible to detect a head injury? In fact, most traumatic brain injury is mild and the symptoms of mild traumatic brain injury can be very subtle. Often, the injury victim has no idea that they sustained an injury until days or even weeks after the accident. Even doctors may miss the symptoms of a mild TBI, concussion, minor head trauma, minor brain injury or minor head injury.

Symptoms that occur after the time of injury are known as post-concussive symptoms. They include:

• Fatigue
• Headaches
• Visual disturbances
• Memory loss
• Poor attention/concentration
• Sleep disturbances
• Dizziness/loss of balance
• Irritability-emotional disturbances
• Feelings of depression
• Seizures
• Nausea
• Loss of smell
• Sensitivity to light and sounds
• Mood changes
• Getting lost or confused
• Slowness in thinking

In some cases, symptoms can last up to a year or even longer.

Mild TBI often occurs as the result of a forceful motion of the head or impact during a Cleveland car crash or an Akron slip and fall accident. The victim looks normal and appears normal, but may not feel or think in a normal way. This makes the diagnosis easy to miss. Family and friends may notice changes in behavior before the injured person realizes there is a problem. Often frustration with everyday tasks at work and at home may lead the injury victim to seek treatment.

Patients with mild to moderate injuries may receive skull and neck X-rays to check for bone fractures or spinal instability. Often mild TBI can be treated with rest and continued observation. The injury victim will be asked to refrain from any activities or sports that may cause a second concussion until he has been symptom-free for at least one week. Multiple concussions or mild TBI’s can cause cumulative damage.
