Allen County is one of the more populated counties within Ohio, with nearly 69,000 residents, and is located in the northwest portion of the state. Allen County was founded in early 1846, and was named in honor of politician and 1812 war veteran John Allen. Lima is the county seat for Allen County, but is otherwise unremarkable when it comes to crash and traffic violation statistics.
During 2008, the towns with the highest total number of crashes included American with 491, Bath with 448, Perry with 278, and Shawnee with 263. What is immediately and particularly interesting about these figures is the fact that the Township of Bath has a population of 9,819 and the Township of American has a population of 15,516. Despite this, the two towns have nearly comparable crash total-crash statistics in 2008. This is not a statistic aberration or a one-time occurrence; in 2007 Bath recorded a grand total of 472 traffic accidents while American recorded 529. Once again, Perry and Shawnee rounded out the top 4-townships within Allen County with 274 and 270 total crashes respectively.
While the comparison between total crashes in American and Bath is interesting, the figures of Perry and Shawnee might be even more interesting due to their respective populations of 3,620 and 12,220. In short, the Township of Perry would certainly seem to be one of the more dangerous townships within Allen County on a per capita basis. Add to this a grand total of 3 traffic-related fatalities in 2008, more than any other township within Allen County, and Perry is anything but safe from a statistical point of view. In fact, only Marion was able to match the three traffic-related fatalities in 2008, and is home to approximately twice as many residents.
The Township of Spencer was a relatively safe location for motorists in 2007, with only 27
traffic accidents reports. This happened to be the lowest within the entire area that Allen County encompasses. The Township of Spencer remained the safest place for motorists in Allen County again in 2008, with a grand total 31 traffic accidents. Not even a single traffic related fatality was reported within the Township of Spencer in 2007 or 2008, though there were a pair of alcohol-related traffic accidents that resulted in a single injury during 2008.
Strangely enough, alcohol does not seem to play a major role in the traffic accidents in Allen County. Of the 2,123 traffic accidents in 2007, alcohol played a role in only 83. In 2008, a grand total of 2117 traffic accidents were reported, only 64 of which were believed to be related to alcohol. Both of these statistics show that Allen County as a whole seems to be a sober place, despite the large number of traffic accidents experienced each year. Not surprisingly, the Township of Bath led the number of alcohol-related traffic accidents in both 2008 with 12, but was actually edged out by American in 2007. In fact, the Township of American reported a total of 16 traffic accidents in 2007 there were attributable to alcohol, while the Township of Bath reported only 14. Also reporting 14 alcohol-related traffic accidents in 2007 was Shawnee, and Perry followed closely with 9.
