Named after Continental Army office Richard Butler, Butler County is located along the western border of Ohio and part of the Cincinnati-Middletown Metropolitan area (OH-KY-IN). With over 171,000 residents, Butler County is one of the most populous counties in Ohio, and lists Hamilton as its largest population center and seat of its county government. Interestingly, Hamilton exists where Fort Hamilton once stood guard against Native American attacks, and Richard Butler was stationed for part of his career.
Despite having a large population as far as counties in Ohio goes, only 3,924 crashes occurred in Butler County in 2007 and another 4,013 crashes were recorded in 2008. While the numbers might seem a little high compared to other counties, the fact is that Butler County is fairly safe for drivers if measured on a per capita basis. What makes these figures even more impressive is the fact that only 17 traffic related deaths were reported in 2007, the result of 16 unique traffic accidents. 2008 saw a small spike in these statistics, with 15 unique traffic accidents resulting in 18 traffic-related deaths, but these figures are very low for a county with nearly 172,000 residents.
The Township of West Chester recorded the greatest number of total crashes and traffic-related fatalities in 2007, with 1,713 and 4 respectively. In 2008, West Chester experienced 1,840 total crashes but no fatalities. West Chester is large, with 54,895 residents, and thus it is only to be expected to be a traffic accident magnet, but its per capita accident rate is more or less in line with the Township of Liberty. The Township of Liberty has a population of 22,819, and recorded 682 total traffic accidents in 2007, 3 of which resulted in a single fatality a piece for a total of 3 traffic-related deaths. In 2008, the Township of Liberty saw a serious spike in total traffic accidents; 779 total, with three traffic-related deaths attributable to a pair of fatal crashes.
Another large township, Fairfield with 15,571 residents, seems to be comparatively safe at first glance with only 17 total crashes in 2007 and 13 in 2008. Unfortunately, a pair of fatal crashes in 2007 resulted in three fatalities and a trio of fatal accidents killed four people in 2008. These statistics are unusual in that few other townships have such a high rate of fatal traffic accidents.
Another unusual statistic worth looking at is the fact that Liberty experienced a total of nine unknown and/or un-attributable traffic accidents in 2007, the same as the substantially larger West Chester. While the Township of Liberty did experience another 6 such incidents in 2008, West Chester saw a bewildering 22 total traffic accidents that could not initially be attributed to any single motorist.
Alcohol played a role in 202 traffic accidents and 6 fatalities in 2007, a significant portion of which occurred in West Chester. 2008 saw a near repeat of these figures with 210 total alcohol-related traffic accidents and 10 alcohol-related traffic fatalities, again with West Chester leading the pack. Surprisingly, Hanover was also of interest from an alcohol-related traffic accident standpoint in both years, with 21 accidents and 1 death in 2007 followed by 19 accidents and a pair of deaths in 2008.
