Long and flat, Champaign County derives its name from the French word for plain. Located in central Ohio, Champaign County is home to 38,890 residents and lists Urbana as both its county seat and its most populous township. With 14,968 residents, Urbana is still a relatively small population center. As such, it is critical to view all traffic-related statistics relating to Champaign County as possibly suspect on a per-year basis as a few incidents can skew metrics easily.
With a grand total of 537 traffic accidents recorded in 2007 and another 533 traffic accidents in 2008, Champaign County seems to be reasonably safe for motorists. Only four fatal traffic accidents occurred in 2008, each with a single fatality. 2007 saw seven such accidents along with seven traffic-related fatalities. While it would seem logical to assume that Urbana would be the nexus for traffic-related fatalities, it is actually Goshen that recorded the greatest number of traffic-related fatalities in 2007 with only a pair of such incidents. Considering that the Township of Goshen is home to only 3,383 residents, these statistics only go to reinforce the aforementioned warning about attempting to glean meaningful statistics from any single year; in fact, the Township of Goshen reported no traffic-related fatalities in 2008.
Despite having 105 total traffic accidents in 2007 and 109 in 2008, Urbana experienced only a single traffic-related fatality each year. These numbers are surprisingly low, and actually mark Urbana as a very safe population center for motorists in Champaign County. On the other end of the per capita road-safety spectrum is the Township of Salem.
The Township of Salem recorded a grand total of 56 traffic accidents and a single fatality in 2007, and 49 total traffic accidents and another fatality in 2008. For a township with barely 2,300 residents, these figures are on the high side. Other townships in Champaign County to experience a large number of traffic accidents in 2007 include: Mad River (81), Union (56), and Goshen (50). 2008 saw a few of the same names top the list of dangerous places in Champaign County for motorists: Mad River (87), Union (58), Wayne (51), and Salem (49). Goshen only experienced a total of 36 traffic accidents in 2008, none of which were fatal.
Mad River is another relatively small township in Champaign County, with only 2,650 residents. Given the comparatively high number of traffic accidents, it is safe to suggest that Mad River is far from the safest place for motorists in Champaign County. Despite the high number of traffic accidents reported in the Township of Mad River, only a single fatality in 2007 and 2008 were reported there. It is worth observing that the Township of Mad River accounted for 7 of the 33 alcohol-related traffic accidents in 2007, more than any other township in Champaign County. While a single alcohol-related traffic fatality was reported in Mad River during 2007, 2008 was a DUI-fatality free year for Mad River. In fact, Mad River no longer topped the alcohol-related traffic accident list in 2008; Urbana and the much-smaller Township of Salem shared that dubious honor with five incidents each.
