Traumatic Brain Injury: Do you have an Ohio personal injury case?

Traumatic brain injury or TBI is a serious injury that results when sudden trauma, such as a blow to the head, causes damage to the brain. Every year there are more than 1,365,000 emergency room visits for treatment of TBI. Around 275,000 people are hospitalized and 52,000 die. Nearly one-third of injury-related deaths are due to a TBI.

Children under four-years-old and adults over 70 are most likely to sustain a TBI.

Falls are the leading cause of TBI. More than one-third (35.2%) of TBI’s are the result of falls. Every year, falls account for 523,043 TBI-related emergency room visits and 62,334 hospitalizations. Falls are responsible for half of TBI among children under 14 and sixty percent of TBI in adults aged 65 or older.

Car accidents are the second leading cause of TBI. Motor vehicle accidents account for about 17 percent of TBI’s and are the leading cause of TBI death. About one-third (31.8%) of TBI deaths are the result of motor vehicle crashes. Adults aged 20 to 24 are most likely to sustain a TBI in a car crash.

Other causes of TBI:

Struck-by / against accident: In these incidents the victim collides or is bumped by a moving or stationary object. Examples of these types of accidents include being hit by a falling object or bumping into a low hanging object. These types of accidents account for 16.5% of TBI and 24.8% of TBI in children.
Assault: Assault accounts for 10% of TBI.
Military injury

Symptoms of TBI can be mild, moderate or severe depending on the extent of the damage. Seventy-five percent of TBI’s are mild. Symptoms of mild TBI include:

Loss of consciousness
Headache
Confusion
Lightheadedness
Dizziness
Blurred vision or tired eyes
Ringing in the ears
Bad or strange taste in the mouth
Fatigue
Lethargy
Changes in sleep patterns
Behavior or mood changes
Trouble with memory, concentration, attention or thinking

Even mild symptoms that last for a few weeks interfere with one’s ability to work and earn a living. Severe TBI can lead to permanent, serious disability that seriously impacts the victim’s quality of life.

Symptoms of moderate to severe TBI:

Any or all the symptoms of mild TBI listed above
Headache that gets worse or does not go away
Repeated nausea or vomiting
Convulsions
Seizures
Inability to awaken from sleep
Dilation of one or both pupils
Slurred speech
Weakness or numbness or extremities
Loss of coordination
Increased confusion
Restlessness or agitation
