Ohio highway work zone deaths can be prevented.

Every year, more than 40,000 injuries in highway work zone-related crashes. Unfortunately, some of these accidents also lead to fatalities. In 2009, there were 5,012 crashes in work zones along Ohio roadways and thirteen people lost their lives to Ohio work zone traffic accidents. As an Ohio wrongful death attorney, these statistics are an unfortunate reality that I witness, and I am committed to see everyone held accountable.

There is a record number of road construction transportation projects currently being completed to repair and improve Ohio highways. While many people get impatient with traffic delays, it is important to remember that car crashes cause longer delays than road construction. Staying alert and following signs makes traffic flow smoother and prevents potentially deadly accidents.

Construction Zone Safety Tips

• Stay alert and give full attention to the roadway.

• Pay close attention to signs and work zone flaggers.

• Turn on headlights so workers and other drivers can see your vehicle.

• Do not tailgate and leave plenty of room for those sudden stops.

• Do not speed. Slow down to the posted speed limits.

• Don’t drive too slowly. Keep up with the traffic flow.

• Do not change lanes in work zones.

• Do not try to go around traffic. Fifteen percent of worksite accidents occur when traffic in the travelling lane is stopped.

• Avoid distractions in vehicles. Avoid changing radio stations and using cell phones while driving through construction zones.

• Expect the unexpected.

• Keep an eye out for workers and their equipment.

According to the Ohio department of Transportation, the most common causes of most work zone related crashes are speeding, vehicles following too close together, and drivers making improper lane changes. In Ohio fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.
