Located in the southwestern portion of Ohio, Clinton County is home to 40,543 residents and covers approximately 412 square miles. Wilmington is the county seat for Clinton County, which derives its name from former United States Vice President George Clinton and not former United States President William Jefferson Clinton.
Overall, Clinton County is a fairly safe place for motorists with only 914 traffic accidents on record in 2007 and another 824 in 2008. A decline of almost 10% in annual traffic accidents may be attributable to many public safety initiates, but it could also be the direct result of the fact that a population of just over 40,000 is a small data set and is subject to random statistical abnormalities. This is even truer when comparing the various townships in Clinton County, so it is important to look at trends that take place over multiple years instead of trying to glean critical data from a single year.
One statistic that is impressive about the traffic accidents in Clinton County is the fact that there were only 8 fatal traffic accidents in 2007 resulting in an equal number of traffic-related fatalities. Only 5 fatal traffic accidents were recorded in 2008, which resulted in a total of 6 fatalities.
Union is the largest township in Clinton County with 14,929 residents. Despite being the largest township in Clinton County, comprising over a third of the county’s total population, the township recorded roughly a quarter of the total traffic accidents in 2007 with only 233 traffic incidents on file and a single fatality. Similarly, another 223 traffic accidents were reported in the Township of Union in 2008, though two of which led to a total of three fatalities. In a relatively safe county for motorists, the Township of Union stands out as a particularly safe place.
The Township of Liberty is nearly the opposite of Union in terms of road safety statistics, with 99 traffic accidents reported in 2007 along with a pair of traffic-related fatalities and another 60 traffic accidents reported in 2008. Fortunately, the Township of Liberty recorded no fatal traffic accidents in 2008. What makes the Township of Liberty particularly dangerous is the fact that it is home to just over 1,000 total residents. If one were to take the crash statistics of Liberty on a per capita basis and scale them to match Union, far more than a thousand traffic accidents would occur per year.
Other townships in Clinton County that experienced a high number of traffic accidents in 2007 included: Chester (99), Washington (88), Marion (50), and Adams (49). Most of these townships have populations in the near-2000 range, which makes them fairly easy to compare side by side in terms of road-safety on a per capita basis. 2008 saw Chester retain its relatively dangerous streak, though none of the other townships from 2007 followed suit: Chester (94), Green (74), Liberty (60), Vernon (57), and Clark (54).
Five of the six traffic-related fatalities in 2007 were attributable to alcohol, including two in Richland, and one fatality in each of the following townships: Adams, Green, and Liberty. 2008 was a much more sober year in Clinton County with only 30 traffic incidents being attributable to alcohol, down from 53 the previous year. Also of note is the fact that Clinton County recorded zero alcohol-related traffic accidents in 2008, an impressive feat for a county of nearly 40,000.
