Named in honor of Christopher Columbus, Columbiana County is located along the eastern edge of Ohio. Lisbon is the county seat for Columbiana County, but the Township of Perry has the largest number of residents residing within the borders of Columbiana County. With 94,853 total residents, Columbiana County is above-average in terms of county population in Ohio. This also means that it is difficult, but not impossible, to glean meaningful statistics by looking at the traffic-incident records provided by the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
Despite the fact that Columbiana is home to roughly 95,000 residents, there are surprisingly few total traffic accidents reported in Columbiana County each year. For example, 2007 saw only 1,563 total traffic accidents in Columbiana County, while 2008 saw only 1,686. A near-8% year for year increase in the total number of traffic accidents in Columbiana County might seem serious, but it appears less serious when the fatalities and PDO crashes are considered. 2007 saw a grand total of only 18 fatalities on the roads of Columbiana County, but 1,054 PDO crashes. 2008 saw fewer total deaths on the roads of Columbiana County, with only 10 traffic fatalities, but a large spike in PDO incidents that accounts for the majority of the year to year increase in total accidents.
The Township of Perry has a population of 17,049 residents in Columbiana County, which is by far the largest population center in Columbiana County. Despite this fact, the Township of Perry did not record the most traffic accidents in 2007 or in 2008. The most dangerous townships in Columbiana County for motorists in 2007 were: Saint Clair (286), Fairfield (130), Madison (130), and Center (102). In 2008, the most dangerous townships for motorists in Columbiana County were almost the same and occurred in nearly the same order: Saint Clair (286) Fairfield (143), Madison (138) and Salem (127). For the record, the Township of Center had a total of 110 traffic accidents in 2008, which still makes the 6,473-resident township very dangerous on a per-capita basis.
What is more impressive, though in a negative way, is the fact that the population of Saint Clair is just shy of 8,000. With less than half the population of Perry, and recording well over twice the annual traffic accidents, the Township of Saint Clair is a decidedly dangerous place for motorists. With 10 alcohol-related traffic accidents and a single alcohol-related traffic fatality in 2007, it would seem that Saint Clair’s traffic problems have little to do with drinking and driving. This fact was underscored by 2008 statistics showing no alcohol-related traffic fatalities in Saint Clair, though a grand total of 12 recorded accidents involved alcohol.
On the positive side, the Township of Perry seems to be a very safe place for motorists from a drinking and driving standpoint. Only two alcohol-related traffic accidents were reported in Perry during 2007 and another seven in 2008, none of which proved fatal. Fortunately, there are no ‘fatality capitals’ in Columbiana County, though Fairfield and Knox appear at or near the top of the list in both 2007 and 2008. This may be a statistical anomaly caused by a small data set, but the fact that the Township of Fairfield made it on the list of most dangerous townships in Columbiana County during 2007 and 2008 may indicate that further evaluation is needed.
