Located near the heart of Ohio, Coshocton County is home to just over 36,000 residents. Coshocton County takes its name from the Delaware Native American language, though the actual translation is still debated. Some believe that the translation is “union of waters” while others believe that the translation is “black bear crossing.” While the debate over the translation continues 200 years after the county was founded, the traffic statistics might be even more debatable due to the very low population statistics involved. Simply put, less than 37,000 is a small statistical data set, especially when spread out over 568 square miles.
Coshocton County reported a grand total of 688 traffic accidents in 2007, but only 250 in 2008. This is a very serious inconsistency, and may call the data gathering and/or reporting techniques used by the Ohio Department of Public Safety into question. The traffic-related fatalities seemed to stay consistent between 2007 and 2008, with seven and six respectively.
The Coshocton County townships that reported the most traffic accidents in 2007 included: Tuscarawas with 85 total traffic accidents, Jackson with 83, Lafayette with 59, Keene with 49, and Bethlehem and Franklin with 42 each. Surprisingly, only three of the seven traffic-related fatalities in 2007 occurred in the aforementioned townships, with no more than a single fatality each. It was the township of Oxford that had the most traffic fatalities in 2007, with two.
2008 appears to have been a much safer year for motorists in Coshocton County, or at least year in which new reporting methods were used. The most dangerous townships in Coshocton County during 2008 were reported as: Lafayette with 27 total traffic accidents, Jackson with 26, Tuscarawas with 22, Franklin with 21, and Oxford with 20. Reporting inconsistencies aside, the fact that Tuscarawas, Jackson, Lafayette, and Franklin top both the 2007 and 2008 list for most traffic accidents would suggest that they are not the safest of places for motorists in Coshocton County.
In most cases, a high number of traffic accidents within a township or county can be attributable to alcohol consumption. Looking at the 2007 alcohol-related traffic accident statistics for Coshocton County reveals and interesting fact: Tuscarawas tops the list with seven alcohol-related accidents, but Franklin also has four such incidents on record and Bethlehem reported a pair. There were also other townships on the list of alcohol-offenders in 2007, though they did not make the list for most dangerous townships in Coshocton County. One example is White Eyes, which actually ranked third in 2007 for alcohol-related traffic accidents. Not surprisingly, Tuscarawas and Lafayette tied for the most alcohol related accidents in Coshocton County during 2008 with three apiece, and a combined total of three alcohol-related traffic fatalities.
The Township of Crawford was fairly safe for motorists during 2007, reporting only 20 traffic accidents and a population of nearly 1,600. In 2008, the Township of Crawford cut that number in half, to 10 traffic accidents, though the numbers are very suspect. It is also worth noting that no motorists or pedestrians died in Crawford during 2007 or 2008 in a motor vehicle-related accident.
