Erie County Ohio Car Accident Attorney Discusses Statistics

Erie County Ohio derives its name from the same group of Native Americans that the great lake on the county’s northern border does. At 626 square miles, Erie County is one of the larger counties in Ohio, and lists Sandusky as its largest population center and its county seat. Erie County is also home to many townships, with a combined population of 51,340.

Erie County recorded a grand total of 1,638 traffic accidents in 2007 and another 1,667 the following year. Despite the total number of traffic accidents in Erie County remaining fairly steady, the number of traffic-related deaths jumped from only one in 2007 to nine in 2008. On the surface, it might seem that Erie County became a much more dangerous place in 2008, but the facts may simply point to common statistical aberrations found in smaller data sets.

The three most populated townships in Erie County are Perkins with 12,578 residents, Huron with 10,530 residents, and Vermillion with 9,575 residents. Perkins was far and away the leader in traffic accidents in 2007 with 502 total traffic accidents on record, and again in 2008 with a total of 535 traffic accidents on record. What is unusual is the fact that neither Huron nor Vermillion suffered a high rate of per capita traffic accidents either year. The Township of Huron reported only 135 traffic accidents in 2007 and 166 in 2008, while the Township of Vermillion only reported 133 and 115 respectively.

These figures may seem high until the Township of Margaretta and the Township of Milan are considered. The Township of Margaretta reported a total of 203 traffic accidents in 2007 and another 166 in 2008, which is higher than the Erie County average for a township with only 6,289 residents. The Township of Milan reported even more alarming statistics, with 200 traffic accidents on record in 2007 and 216 during 2008. These figures are dangerously high for a township with 3,686 residents, as are the 4 traffic-related fatalities in 2008 and the single traffic-related fatality in 2007.

The Township of Huron actually seems to be a safe haven for motorists in Erie County, with only 135 traffic accidents on record in 2007 and another 173 in 2008. Unfortunately, 2008 also saw a pair of traffic-related fatalities in the Township of Huron, but that is not entirely unexpected for a township with over 10,000 residents. While neither of the traffic-related fatalities recorded in the Township of Huron during 2008 were linked to alcohol, a total of 8 of the overall accidents that year were.

The Township of Perkins actually recorded the most alcohol-related traffic accidents in 2008 with a total of 15, two of which proved fatal. The Township of Perkins shared the dubious honor of being the alcohol-traffic accident leader in Erie County in 2007 with the much smaller Margaretta, though neither township recorded any alcohol-related traffic fatalities that year. It is probably no coincidence that both of these cities have an overall high rate of traffic accidents, as alcohol-related traffic accidents typically represent only a portion of overall alcohol-related traffic rime.
