Fairfield County Ohio Car Accident Attorney Discusses Statistics

Fairfield County is located in the very heart of Ohio, and derives its name from the region bearing the same name in the United Kingdom. Lancaster is listed as the largest population center in the 509-square mile county, and also happens to be the county seat. With over 120,000 residents, Lancaster is home to a number of townships that have a total of nearly 80,000 residents.

Despite being home to just under 80,000 residents in various townships throughout Fairfield County, only 1,339 traffic accidents were reported in the county during 2007. 2008 saw a serious spike in total traffic accidents, with a total of 1,460 such incidents reported. There is a tiny bit of silver lining in these statistics when looking at the number of traffic-related fatalities that declined from 9 in 2007 to only 8 in 2008, despite a 9% increase in overall traffic accidents. Interestingly, three fatalities in 2007 and again in 2008 were attributable to alcohol, as were 94 and 105 accidents respectively.

While the Township of Violet is the largest of the townships in Fairfield County, it does not necessarily have the highest per capita traffic accident rate. With 26,914 residents, a total of 248 traffic accidents and 3 traffic-related fatalities during 2007 is not entirely unexpected. 2008 saw the Township of Violet report another 258 traffic accidents and a pair of traffic-related fatalities, both of which are slightly above average.

The Township of Greenfield has only 4,944 residents, or just under 20% of the number of total residents in the Township of Violet, yet reports an abnormally haigh number of traffic accidents each year. During 2007, the Township of Greenfield reported a total of 174 traffic accidents and another 219 were reported during 2008. Surprisingly, not a single accident in Greenfield resulted in a fatality during either year. Being a larger township, Violet tends to have the most fatal traffic accidents each year, though the Township of Pleasant tied the much larger Violet in 2007 with a total of 3 traffic-related fatalities. This would seem to be a statistically anomaly for the township with only 5,549 residents as there were no traffic-related fatalities reported in the Township of Pleasant during 2008.

The number of unknown and/or unexplained traffic accidents in Fairfield County during 2007 reached 23, 4 of which occurred in the Township of Berne. Hocking, Madison, and Walnut each reported three such incidents during 2007. Hocking was again listed as the township in Fairfield County to experience the most unexplained and/or un-attributable traffic accidents in 2008, with four such occurrences and Walnut again experienced a trio of such accidents. Berne, Bloom, and Liberty all experienced two such traffic accidents during 2008. The number of un-attributable and/or unexplained traffic accidents in Fairfield County tends to be fairly high, especially for a county with many townships in the 2,000 to 5,000 resident range.

Alcohol was linked to 94 of the traffic accidents in 2007, with the township of Berne experiencing the most alcohol-related traffic accidents that year with a total of 13. Berne again topped the alcohol-related traffic accident list in Fairfield County during 2008 with a total of 17 accidents. Overall, Berne is not the safest place for motorists in Fairfield County.
