Home to 31,069 residents, Gallia County is located near the southern-most tip of Ohio. Deriving its name from the Latin word for France, Gallia County also lists county seat and largest population as Gallipolis. Gallia County recorded a total of 701 traffic accidents in 2007, 4 of which proved fatal, and another 718 in 2008 along with a trio of traffic-related fatalities. The comparatively small population of many of the townships in Gallia County makes discerning relevant information from a single year of statistics a real challenge.
Townships in Gallia County that reported the highest number of total traffic accidents in 2007 were: Green with 120 total accidents, Springfield with 118, Gallipolis with 81, and Addison with 72 total traffic accidents on record. The same townships reprise their roles as dangerous townships for motorists in Gallia County with the follow number of total crashes: Green with 125, Springfield with 109, Gallipolis with 106, Raccoon with 65, and Addison with 64.
It is a little surprising that Gallipolis does not dominate the total crash statistics for both years, but this may be due to factors such as increased law enforcement activity in the larger township. What is surprising is that the slightly smaller Township of Green experienced almost 50% more crashes than Gallipolis during 2007, and almost a quarter more in 2008. Even more surprising is the fact that Addison is home to only 2,366 residents, less than half that of the county seat of Gallipolis.
Even stranger is the fact that neither township recorded a single traffic-related fatality during either 2007 or 2008. What is not strange about Gallia County are the alcohol related traffic statistics, which are actually quite normal. 2007 saw a total of 43 alcohol-related traffic accidents go on record in Gallia County, resulting in a single fatality that took place in the Township of Raccoon. 2008 saw Gallia County record a total of 46 alcohol-related traffic accidents that resulted in a pair of fatalities, one in the Township of Ohio and the other in the Township of Huntington.
When viewed on a per capita basis, Gallipolis is one of the safest townships in Gallia County while the Township of Addison would appear to be one of the most dangerous. Green is another township that appears to be quite dangerous from a per capita point of view, as it recorded a total of 67 traffic accident-related injuries in 2007, and another 59 in 2008. While these figures put Green on the top of the traffic-related injury statistics in 2007, Gallipolis did soundly beat Green in 2007 with 69 traffic-related injuries.
Unfortunately, traffic-related injuries are not necessarily an honest measure of true injuries. Simply put, many people who are injured in traffic accidents report to hospitals to ensure that they are indeed healthy, while others report to hospitals to fake or exaggerate an injury in order to try to form the basis for a lawsuit. Overall, Gallia County is a slightly dangerous place for motorists in Ohio, but there are far worse places to travel through or visit.
