Named after the famous signer of the Declaration of Independence, Hancock County is located near the northwest border of Ohio, and is home to 71,295 residents. Of those nearly 72,000 residents, 32,328 live in the various townships located in Hancock County. Hancock County is a comparatively dangerous place for motorists in Ohio, with 1,317 accidents on record in 2007 and another 1,362 in 2008. These figures are alarming when viewed on a per capita basis, and are worthy of further investigation.
Liberty is the most populated township within the borders of Hancock County, with 6,469 residents, followed by the Township of Washington with 4,602 residents. It is generally reasonable to assume that the most populated townships in any given county would be home to the most accidents, and that is certainly true in this case as the Township of Liberty experienced 214 traffic accidents in 2007 and another 209 in 2008. In both years, the Township of Liberty experienced a single fatality. What is interesting is the fact that the Township of Washington is not even close to the top of the list when it comes to traffic accident-prone townships in Hancock County.
In 2007, the most traffic accident prone townships in Hancock County, other than Liberty, included: Marion with a grand total of 167 traffic accidents, Allen 163, Eagle with 99, Orange with 83, and finally Washington with 77 total traffic accidents. In 2008, the most traffic accident prone townships in Hancock, again excluding Liberty, were: Marion with a grand total of 172 traffic accidents, Allen with 152 total traffic accidents, Eagle with 103, Jackson with 77, Washington with 75, and Orange with 70 traffic accidents.
The fact that the Township of Allen is home to just 2,110 yet comes in second place when looking at overall crashes marks Allen is a particularly dangerous place for motorists in Hancock County. Of course, Marion is also a very dangerous place for motorists on a per capita basis, as it is home to only 2,203 residents.
Despite being home to many traffic accidents for such a small population, Hancock County does not experience many alcohol-related traffic accidents. In fact, only 51 total traffic accidents in 2007 were linked to alcohol, however 4 of those accidents resulted in a total of 5 fatalities. 4 of those 5 fatalities took place in the Township of Allen, further marking that particular township as a particularly dangerous place for motorists in Hancock County. 2008 saw Hancock County record another 58 alcohol-related traffic accidents and another 4 alcohol-related traffic fatalities.
The Township of Washington is a relatively safe place for motorists in Hancock County if viewed on a per capita basis, as it has a population of just over 4,600. Despite this fact, there were a relatively high number of unexplained and/or un-attributable traffic accidents in the Township of Washington in 2008, with 4 such incidents on record. Strangely enough, the Township of Washington was again on top of this particular list in 2007 with 7 total unexplained and/or un-attributable incidents.
