Named after post-colonial governor of Virginia, Patrick Henry, Henry County is home to 29,210 residents. Located near the northwest corner of Ohio, Henry County sees plenty of inclement weather and other adverse driving conditions throughout a healthy portion of the year. The Township of Napoleon is both the most populated township in Henry County as well as the county seat, all this despite the infamously short stature of the man from which the township derives its name.
Overall, Henry County is a relatively safe place for motorists when viewed on a per capita basis. Unfortunately, the comparatively small population of the county does make gleaning valuable information difficult without the context of multiple years. To prove this point, there were a grand total of 554 traffic accidents reported in Henry County during 2007, including traffic-related 10 fatalities. 2008 saw 620 total traffic accidents in Henry County, but only 5 total traffic-related fatalities. It would be logical to expect that traffic-related fatalities would be a percentage of the total number of traffic accidents in total, but that is not the case in Henry County during the 2007 and 2008 years. The reason is probably related directly to the smaller data set, but there are other interesting facts worth exploring as well.
Perhaps the most interesting statistics come when comparing the total number of traffic accidents to the populations of the various townships in Henry County. For example, 2008 saw the Township of Liberty and the Township of Napoleon in a tie for the second most overall traffic accidents on file with 67 each, despite the fact that Liberty is home to just under 2,600 residents and Napoleon claiming a total of 10,331 residents. The overall greatest number of traffic accidents reported during 2008 in Henry County were concentrated in the Township of Ridgeville, home to just 1,132 people. Damascus comes in just behind Napoleon and Liberty in terms of traffic accidents with 62 such incidents on file during 2008. For a township with only 1,781 residents, these figures are alarming.
2007 saw very similar statistics, with the following townships leading Henry County in terms of overall traffic accidents: Napoleon with 74 total traffic accidents, Ridgeville with 66, Washington and Liberty with 60 each, and Harrison with 58 total traffic accidents on file. It is again worth noting that the small population of Henry County has created a situation in which each year sees startling changes to the overall traffic accidents in the county.
Another unusual set of traffic-related statistics in Henry County can be found when looking at the unexplained and/or un-attributable traffic accidents during 2007 and 2008. It would be logical to assume that smaller townships would have few accidents that went unexplained, yet Flatrock (population 1,254) and Washington (population 2,021) were the only townships in 2007 to report such incidents. Even stranger, only a single incident was reported in each town, a fact that was repeated in 2008 with each of the following townships reporting only a single unknown and/or un-attributable traffic accident: Liberty, Napoleon, Monroe, Harrison, Damascus, and Ridgeville.
