Hocking County Ohio Car Accident Attorney Discusses Statistics

Located just south of the very heart of Ohio, Hocking County is home to 28,241 residents. As with many other counties in Ohio, there is an active debate as to the origin of the word Hocking. Some believe it to be derived from the Delaware Indian word that translates as “bottle river.” Others disagree, and say that is a corruption of various English or French words. Despite the fact that there is no clear consensus as to the origin of the name, it is worth noting that the Hocking River does run through the 424 square mile county.

Due to the comparatively small population, it is worth taking any statistics relating to Hocking County with a grain of salt. In fact, multiple years are required to add context to many of the statistics, and the small data set involved does bring up the possibility of statistical anomalies. Simply put, a small change in a township with a small population is not something to be overly concerned about unless it happens year after year. For example, the change in total traffic-accidents from 2007 (442) to 2008 (424) is not necessarily anything but a statistical aberration. Even the change from 5 traffic-related deaths in 2007 to 6 in 2008 is not necessarily significant without additional context.

One way to look at the safest and most dangerous places in Hocking County would be to determine which townships experience the most total traffic accidents each year and then compare those statistics to the population of each township. In 2007, the townships that experienced the most total traffic accidents included: Falls with a grand total of 120, followed by Green with 60, Starr with 46, Good Hope with 45, and the combination of Marion and Benton with 32 traffic accidents each. In 2008, the townships that reported the most total traffic accidents were: Falls with 107, Green with 55, Good Hope with 49, Starr with 42, and Washington with 34. In short, the list is not entirely stable, and thus should be viewed cautiously when trying to decide which townships in Hocking County are innately dangerous.

It is not surprising that the Township of Falls tops the list two years running as it is far and away the most populated township in all of Hocking County with 11,409 residents. The Township of Green only has 2,585 residents, which makes its crash-related statistics comparatively alarming. If one were to scale the total number of traffic accidents in the Township of Green to a township with the population of Falls, there would be at least 50% more traffic accidents on file each year. That is, of course, assuming that traffic accidents and population scale linearly.

It is also worth noting that the Township of Green is routinely atop the list of townships that report unexplained and/or un-attributable accidents. With two such incidents on file during 2007 and another two in 2008, the Township of Green would seem to be a very dangerous place for motorists in Hocking County for more than one reason. It is also worth noting that Green experienced a single traffic-related fatality in 2007 and a pair of traffic-related fatalities in 2008.
