Holmes County Ohio Car Accident Attorney Discusses Statistics
Named after Andrew Holmes, and officer that gave his life during the War of 1812, Holmes County is located just northeast of the heart of Ohio. Occupying 424 square miles, Holmes County is home to 38,943 residents and routinely experiences adverse weather that makes driving dangerous. The dangerous road conditions may help explain the 900 traffic accidents reported in Holmes County during 2007, but the decline to 364 accidents in 2008 remains a mystery.
With such wildly different statistics reported on a year for year basis, it is worth paying very close attention to the traffic-related statistics in Holmes County. It would seem reasonable to expect some serious shifts in the year to year statistics for many townships in Holmes County. For example, the Township of Berlin recorded a grand total of 122 traffic accidents and a pair of traffic-related fatalities during 2007. In 2008, the Township of Berlin recorded only 54 traffic accidents. With a population of 3,857, it is difficult to imagine that these changes are statistical anomalies.
Even stranger, despite the fact that Berlin was on top of the total traffic accident list in Holmes County during 2007, it is not the township claiming the highest population. In fact, the Township of Hardy has 5,643 residents, over 46% more than Berlin. Despite this, the Township of Hardy reported 112 total traffic accidents during 2007, but only 36 in 2008. These year to year decreases seem difficult to believe in larger population centers, and may be attributable to other factors. On a positive note, there were no traffic-related fatalities reported in the Township of Hardy during 2008, though three such incidents were on file in 2007.
It is entirely possible that the difference in statistics is attributed primarily to the methods used to reclassify traffic accidents, in particular PDO and unknown and/or unexplained traffic accidents.. For example, the Township of Washington experienced 51 PDO traffic accidents and a county-high trio of unknown and/or unexplained traffic accidents. In 2008, the Township of Washington only reported 24 PDO crashes and no unknown and/or un-explained traffic accidents. Being that Washington is home to just over 1,800 residents, it would seem unlikely that the township could go from being the county-wide leader in unknown and/or unexplained accidents to experiencing none the next year.
The Township of Berlin saw 93 PDO crashes in 2007 and Hardy saw 96, though the two townships reported 44 and 24 respectively during 2008. Overall, Holmes County saw a decline from 720 PDO crashes in 2007 to 271 in 2008. A decline of this magnitude seems to explain a large portion of the overall traffic accident decline in Holmes County during the same time period.
