How Your Own Insurance Can Protect You From Negligent Drivers In Ohio

Many drivers are unaware that their own automobile insurance contains a type of coverage known as Uninsured/Underinsured motorists coverage or "UM/UIM" coverage. UM/UIM coverage, as the name suggests, provides added coverage from your own insurer for injuries sustained at the hands of negligent drivers who are uninsured or underinsured.

As a result of the tough economic times, more and more drivers in Ohio are paying for only state minimum coverage ($12,500.00 per person) or failing to possess automobile insurance at all. In the event that you are injured by a negligent driver who possesses a state minimum policy or no insurance at all, your own insurance company would then step in and cover the amount that your UM/UIM coverage covers above the amount of the negligent party's policy limits.

So, for example, lets say you are stopped at a stop sign when suddenly you are rear ended in a car accident. Let's say it turns out that the person who hit you was only carrying a state minimum policy which only covers up to $12,500.00 of any damage to you that his negligence has caused. So if you had medical bills totaling $40,000.00, his insurance would only be obligated to pay for $12,500.00 of your damages. However, if you carried a UM/UIM policy of $50,000.00, you insurance would step in and pay for your damages above the negligent parties $12,500.00 up to $50,000.00 total.

While no one anticipates getting into a motor vehicle accident, you can never be too sure in today's unpredictable world. This is why it is important to carry a automobile insurance policy with high UM/UIM policy limits. You need to be concerned about being seriously injured by an uninsured or underinsured motorist and protect yourself with UM / UIM coverage.
