Huron County is located in the north-central part of Ohio, just south Lake Erie. Deriving its name from the Huron Tribe, Huron County is home to 58,487 residents and lists the Township of Norwalk as its largest population center and its county seat. Of the 58,487 residents in Huron County, only 31,077 live in the townships across the county.
In 2007, Huron County recorded a grand total of 842 traffic accidents and 10 traffic-related fatalities. These statistics stayed reasonably stable during 2008, with another 817 traffic accidents and 6 traffic-related fatalities going on the books in Huron County. While 31,077 residents is not necessarily a large enough data set to draw conclusive numbers from without the context of multiple years, it is reassuring to see that the traffic accident rates seem very stable in Huron County.
In 2007, the townships in Huron County with the highest number of overall traffic accidents were: Norwalk with 138 total traffic accidents on file, Fitchville with 71, Townsend with 57, New Haven with 54, as well as Bronson and Wakeman with 52 each. Many of these same townships also appeared on the 2008 list of most traffic accident prone townships in Huron County: Norwalk with 114, New Haven 68, Townsend with 66, Fitchville with 62, Greenfield with 57, and Bronson with 55.
A few interesting alcohol-related facts also figure into the above statistics. For example, Wakeman led the county in overall alcohol-related accidents with a total of 8 on file, followed closely by Norwalk with 7, while both Bronson and Greenwich reported 5 alcohol-related traffic accident each that year. Given the fact that Bronson has roughly twice the population of the 3-digit Greenwich, this is very alarming. Thankfully, only 3 people lost their loves to alcohol-related traffic accidents during 2007 in all of Huron County. 2008 saw four alcohol-related traffic fatalities, but saw the Township of Ridgeville dominate the overall alcohol-related traffic accident list with 6 qualifying accidents on file.
Some of these figures take on a very different image when cast in the light of traffic accidents per capita. For example, 3,685 people live in Norwalk, but Fitchville is home to only 1,012 people. Given the fact that Fitchville was on the list of most traffic accident prone townships in both 2007 and 2008, the population is extremely relevant. It is also worth noting that the population of Wakeman is 2,528 while the Township of Bronson claims only 1,760 residents. Given the comparable number of traffic related accidents experienced by these two townships, it is alarming that there is such a disparity in population.
The Township of New London is one of the safest places for motorists in Huron County on a per capita basis. With a total of 3,440 residents, New London is nearly as large as the Township of Norwalk, yet experienced only 42 traffic accidents in 2007 and another 35 in 2008. Of those 77 total traffic accidents, there was only a single traffic-related fatality reported in New London, which marks it as one of the safest places for motorist in Huron County.
