Jefferson County Ohio Car Accident Attorney Discusses Statistics

Island Creek is the most populous city in Jefferson County, which generally means that the city experiences a larger number of traffic accidents than other cities within Jefferson County. In 2007, the total number of traffic accidents in Island Creek was only 225, compared to the 237 of 2008. Despite having a large population and experiencing approximately 4 to 5 crashes a week, the number of fatal crashes in Island Creek is relatively low; only one in 2007 and two in 2008.

The township of Salem has approximately one-quarter of the population of Island Creek, yet experienced two fatal car accidents in 2007 while only experiencing a total of 68 traffic accidents in the same time frame. Salem had only a single fatal traffic accident in 2008, and ten less total traffic accidents. In fact, many of the smaller towns located in Jefferson county experienced traffic accidents in 2007 that resulted in fatalities, such as: Knox, Mount Pleasant, and Wells. In 2008, the only towns other than Salem and Island Creek experience fatal traffic accidents were Cross Creek, Saline, Wells, Wayne, Knox, and Warren.

It would seem that both fatalities and injuries in Jefferson County scale with population, though the low population in many of the townships results in statistical anomalies if one views the traffic accidents divided by population. Larger cities tend to have more stable accident-related statistics, but some statistics are immune to population-related anomalies. For example, the number of injuries relative to the number of accidents has remained at approximately forty percent through both 2007 and 2008. In 2008, there were a grand total of 823 accidents in Jefferson County, with only 318 injuries reported. In 2007 these numbers were 879 and 359 respectively.

The nearly 7 percent increase in total traffic accidents maybe a product of shifts in the population, but unfortunately the statistics provided by the Department of Public Safety show no change the population of any of the townships within the county. While the date that population data was gathered for each township is unknown and seemingly unchanged, there are two interesting statistically anomalies worth noting in 2007. These anomalies would be Brush Creek and Ross, two of the smallest cities within Jefferson County. Brush Creek has a population of 467, and a grand total of 7 crashes in the 2007 calendar year. Ross experienced 3 accidents with no injuries. In 2008, Ross experienced 11 total crashes and only 6 injuries.
