Logan County is located just west of central Ohio, and takes its name from electrical engineer Benjamin F. Logan. Home to 46,005 residents, Logan County sprawls over 467 square miles, 8 of which are covered with waterways during most of the year. The waterways and location conspire to make Logan County a particularly hazardous place for motorists, and it would be an understatement to note that Ohio is known for its inclement weather.
Overall, Logan County is a fairly safe place for motorists on a per capita basis. Only 874 traffic accidents were recorded in the entire county during 2007, and another 1,001 were recorded in 2008. Despite a 14.5% increase in year to year traffic accidents, the entire county is still relatively safe. This is especially true since the number of overall traffic-related fatalities declined from 11 from 7 during the same time-frame, while the number of PDO crashes increased from 711 to 752. The bottom line is that fatalities were down, PDO crashes were up, and the entire county remained a relatively safe place.
There remain a few traffic-accident prone townships in Logan County worth further exploration, such as Jefferson. Jefferson is home to 2,946 residents yet it records the greatest number of year to year traffic accidents in Logan County. With 139 total traffic accidents on file in 2007, and another 166 in 2008, the Township of Jefferson is far and away the most dangerous place for motorists in all of Logan County. Not surprisingly, the Township of Jefferson was also atop the most alcohol-traffic related accident prone townships in Logan County in 2007, with 12 accidents being linked directly to alcohol. Of those 12 accidents, an even half were PDO crashes and the other half resulted in a total of 6 injuries.
2008 saw the much larger township of Stokes top the alcohol-related traffic accident list in Logan County with 18 total qualifying accidents, and increase from the 10 that earned it second place only a year before. The Township of Stokes also reported a total of 69 traffic accidents and a trio of traffic-related fatalities in 2007, and it is worth noting that two of the fatalities were linked to alcohol. Stokes did record 91 total traffic accidents in 2008, but fortunately there were no traffic-related fatalities reported.
One interesting fact is worth noting, and that is the complete absence of unknown and/or un-attributable traffic accidents in 2007. This is extremely unusual for a county with several townships in the 1,000-5,000 citizen range, which tend to be magnets for such incidents. It might be possible that policies or procedures grouped those accidents into different categories, such as PDO only, during 2007, though 4 such incidents were reported in 2008.
The Township of Lake is a particularly safe place for motorists in Logan County, with a population of 12,492 and only 76 traffic accidents on record in 2007, plus another 59 in 2008. It is also worth noting that none of the 135 total traffic accidents during these two years resulted in fatalities, which is a fairly impressive statistic in and of itself.
