Lucas County takes its name from Robert Lucas, the 12th Governor of Ohio, and contains part of the Toledo Metropolitan Area. The inclusion of part of the Toledo Metropolitan Area means that Lucas County is home to 455,054 residents, though only 102,180 residents are listed as living in the various townships throughout Lucas County. Located along the northern edge of Ohio and bordering Lake Erie, Lucas County spans barely 340 square miles of land and a stunning 255 square miles of waterways and lake.
Despite being home to over 100,000 residents, there are surprisingly few traffic accidents in Lucas County. In fact, only 2,407 total traffic accidents were recorded in Lucas County during 2007, and another 2,548 during 2008. Of these nearly 5,000 traffic accidents, there were only 30 traffic-related fatalities, 17 of which occurred in 2007.
According to data gathered by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, the townships in Lucas County that experienced the most total traffic accidents during 2007 were: Sylvania with 1,044 total traffic accidents, Springfield with 636, Monclova with 230, and Swanton with a total of 214 traffic accidents. These figures almost fall in line with population statistics for those townships, which are: Sylvania is home to 44,253 residents, 24,123 people live in Springfield, 6,767 people live in Monclova, and only 3,354 people live in Swanton.
2008 saw the same cities top the list of most dangerous locations for motorists in Lucas County with the following crash-related statistics: Sylvania with 1,042 total traffic accidents, Springfield with 718, Monclova with 258, and Swanton with 182 total traffic accidents on file. No other townships in the entire county even came close to breaking the 100 traffic accident barrier with the exception of Waterville, which recorded 83 traffic accidents in 2007 and 96 in 2008. For a township with just under 10,000 people, these statistics are not particularly alarming, nor are the two traffic-related fatalities on file in 2007 or the four in 2008.
The alcohol-related traffic accidents in Lucas County do tell an interesting story. Six of the traffic-related fatalities in 2007 were linked to alcohol, as were four in 2008. Even stranger is the fact that Springfield routinely reports approximately 75% the number of overall alcohol-related traffic accidents as the much larger Township of Sylvania. While Sylvania reported 42 alcohol-related traffic accidents in 2007 and again in 2008, Springfield reported 32 and 31 in the same years. With just over half-the population, it is a little unsettling to see Springfield be so competitive with Sylvania in this regard.
Unlike the famous city from which it takes its name, the Township of Jerusalem in Lucas County is actually quite safe, at least for motorists. With a population of 3,181 residents, only 35 traffic accidents were recorded in in Jerusalem in 2007, and another 58 during 2008. Unfortunately, there were traffic-related fatalities on file during both years; 2 in 2007 and 4 in 2008. If the fatalities were set aside as statistical aberrations, the Township of Jerusalem would be a fairly safe city for motorists in all of Ohio.
