Located along the eastern border of Ohio, in the northern section of the state, Mahoning County is home to 257,555 residents. Of those quarter-million plus residents, only 146,438 live in the various townships located throughout the county. It is worth noting that the climate and weather conspire to make Mahoning County a particularly dangerous place for motorists during a significant portion of the year.
Mahoning County recorded a grand total of 4,464 traffic accidents and only 9 traffic-related fatalities in 2007, which is in line with statewide averages. Another 4,413 traffic accidents went on the county books during 2008, along with 11 traffic-related fatalities. The number of alcohol-related traffic accidents reported during those two years remained a consistent 202, though 2008 did see only a pair of alcohol-related traffic fatalities while 2007 saw 5 such occurrences.
There are two larger townships in Mahoning County, Boardman with 42,518 residents and Austintown with 38,001. With roughly half of the entire county’s town-bound population living in one of these two larger towns, there are a few expectations. The first is that roughly half of the total traffic accidents will come from these two townships, and second is that these two townships will provide reasonable year for year statistics that do not fluctuate wildly.
In 2007, Austintown recorded 1,131 total traffic accidents while Boardman reported a total of 1,469 traffic accidents. Combined, the 2,600 traffic accidents are well over the halfway mark for the county. In 2008, Austintown recorded another 1,035 total traffic accidents while Boardman recorded another 1,484. The 2008 combined total of 2,519 is still far over the halfway mark for the county, which means that only one of the two theories held true: the numbers were at least stable, though the two largest townships in Mahoning County are actually comparatively dangerous places for motorists.
It is also worth noting that the Township of Beaver is a very dangerous place for motorists in Mahoning County when measured on a per capita basis. With only 6,466 residents and 302 traffic accidents on file during 2007, the Township of Beaver would have approximately 2000 total traffic accidents on file if it was scaled up to the size of Boardman. This marks the Township of Beaver as one of the most dangerous places in Mahoning County for motorists.
Another interesting trend worth noting is that while Boardman and Austintown both have a high number of unknown and/or un-attributable traffic accidents on file, that particular fact is not unexpected. After all, it is easier to hide from authorities and repair damage quietly in larger populations than it is in comparatively smaller populations. Thus, the real surprise is that the Township of Milton recorded 2 unknown and/or unexplained traffic accidents in 2007, and another 5 in 2008. For a township with a population of just over 4,100, those figures are particularly high. After all, how likely is it that 7 unexplained traffic accidents could happen in a township that is small enough for everyone to know nearly everyone else?
