Marion County is located in the very heart of Ohio, and sprawls over 404 square miles. Home to 66,217 residents, Marion County takes its name from Francis Marion, better known as the Swamp Fox, an officer of the South Carolina militia and the Continental Army. There are precious little water-covered portions of Marion County today, with almost all of the county’s 404 square mile surface area being dry year-round.
Overall, Marion County is a safe place for motorists, especially when the statistics provided by the Ohio Department of Public Safety are viewed on a per capita basis. Only 1,129 traffic accidents were reported in Marion County during 2007, and those traffic accidents resulted in only 8 deaths and 432 traffic-related injuries. In other words, roughly two thirds of the traffic accidents reported in Marion County during 2007 did not result in injury or death. 2008 saw some very similar statistics with 1,161 total traffic accidents reported, along with 6 traffic-related fatalities, and only 359 traffic-related injuries.
Considering that the majority of residents in Marion County reside with the Township of Marion, it is not surprising to see the 44,908-resident township record a countywide high number of traffic accidents during 2007 or 2008. What is surprising is the fact that the figures remain so steady between the years with 419 accidents on file during 2007 and 420 the following year. These statistics still paint the picture of a reasonably safe township. It is the other townships that are worth careful scrutiny.
The other townships that reported the most total traffic accidents during 2007 in Marion County were: Pleasant with 153 total traffic accidents, Claridon with 125, Grand Prairie with 67, Richland with 63, Waldo with 62, and Big Island with 61 total traffic accidents. 2008 saw the : Pleasant with 149, Claridon with 138, Grand Prairie with 78, Richland with 76, and Big Island with 65 total traffic accidents.
Immediately of interest is the Township of Grand Prairie, home to only 1,609 residents. With 72.5 traffic accidents per year, Grand Prairie would be home to over 2020 traffic accidents per year if it had a population equal to that of the Township of Marion. Of course, that also assumes that total traffic accidents scale linearly with population. Even though that is not the case, it still serves to illustrate just how dangerous the Township of Grand Prairie is for motorists in Marion County on a per capita basis.
It is also worth noting that the Township of Marion reported a pair of unexplained traffic accidents un 2007, and another in 2008. These figures are very low for a larger township. Generally speaking, townships in the 10,000-plus resident range as relatively safe havens for hit and run crimes compared to the smaller townships where everyone knows everyone. The larger the population center, the more prevalent this sort of traffic crime tends to be. Thus it is unusual to see Big Island, Bowling Green, Claridon, Grand Prairie, Montgomery, and Prospect all report a single incident during 2007 despite having comparatively small but unique populations in terms of raw numbers.
