Named in honor of Return J. Meigs Jr., the 4th Governor of Ohio and the 5th United States Postmaster General, Meigs County is located along the southern rim of Ohio. Covering 432 square miles and home to 23,072 residents, Meigs County lists its largest township as that of Salisbury with 6,441 residents. It is also worth noting that Meigs County is located in an area of Ohio that has frequently inclement weather, and that should translate into dangerous driving conditions during at least three months out of the average year.
Despite this fact, Meigs County is actually a very safe place for motorists in Ohio. Recording only 387 total traffic accidents in 2007, and 345 the following year, Meigs County is a remarkably safe place for motorists. Further underscoring this observation is the fact that only 4 individuals lost their lives on the roads of Meigs County during 2007, and another 3 during the following year. Even though it is usually worth noting that smaller data sets are prone to anomalies, the crash statistics provided by the Ohio Department of Public Safety seem remarkably stable as far as Meigs County is concerned.
The townships in Meigs County that experienced the most overall traffic accidents during 2007 were: Salisbury with a grand total of 105 total traffic accidents on file, Sutton with 57, Chester with 56, Scipio with 27, Columbia with 24, Olive with 22, Lebanon with 21, and both Orange and Rutland with 20 traffic accidents each. 2008 saw many of these townships again report comparatively high traffic accident statistics, but bear in mind that these figures are actually low when compared with other counties in Ohio: Salisbury with 76 total traffic accidents on file, Sutton with 48, Bedford with 33, Chester with 41, Columbia and Rutland with 26 each,, and Scipio with 22 total traffic accidents on file.
From a per capita traffic accident point of view, Sutton is slightly more dangerous than Salisbury, as it is home to 3,250 residents versus Salisbury’s population of 6,441. The difference may be academic, and again it is worth pointing out that both townships are remarkably safe places for motorists. The Township of Chester is substantially smaller in terms of overall population, with only 2,332 residents, and thus the fact that it often trails Sutton by only a few overall accidents marks it as one of the more dangerous townships in Meigs County on a per capita basis, but again that is not to be taken as an indication that the Township of Chester is dangerous for motorists overall.
It is worth observing that 5 of Chester’s 2007 traffic accidents, including its only traffic-related fatality, were linked directly to alcohol. Thankfully, the Township of Chester did not experience even a single traffic accident that could be linked to alcohol the following year. It is only natural to assume that Salisbury would top the 2007 list of alcohol-related traffic accidents given its size, but it is unusual to see the much smaller Township of Scipio (1,050 residents) tie Salisbury with 7 such incidents in 2008.
